Description - Heavy attack fighter. Strong multi-role craft. Most versatile of Alliance fighters,
its ion cannons allow it to disable enemy vessels. It's shield rating makes up for it's
sluggish performance.
The Y-wing fighter is the "old standyby" of various militia navies across the galaxy. Named
for the rear placement of its two engine nacelles, the Y-wing is a slow, durable, front-line
starfighter. In the early years of the Rebel Alliance, the Y-wing was used as the Alliance's
main starfighter. As the X-wing came into widespread use within the Alliance's forces, the
Y-wing was slowly phased out of front-line duty into backup and supplementary roles. However,
it remained a very reliable ship and was still widely used later in the Galactic Civil War.
The Y-wing's armament makes it a very effective combat starfighter/bomber. Its two laser
cannons are placed very close together on the nose of the fighter, making it likely that a
direct hit when fired together would result in both shots connecting; one of the X-wing's
annoying tendencies is to be too "on target", as the placement of the S-Foils makes it
difficult to score with more than one laser at a time. In fact, TIE Fighters often evaded
X-wing fire by staying right in the middle of its targets--all four lasers would miss the
small cockpit ball. The Y-wing has no such trouble. The Y-wing also has two ion laser cannon,
enabling it to disable craft and stations and allow board and capture operations to proceed.
After disabling the target, Y-wings could switch back to laser cannons and keep a
patrol route around the boarding party. Without this ability, the Rebel Alliance would
have been doomed to failure early on; the Rebels depended on food, medecine, and other
supplies gained from capture operations led against Imperial convoys. The fledgling
Alliance didn't have enough fighters to spare each capture team disabling craft as well
as patrol ships. The Y-wing is also a very effective bomber, boasting eight proton
torpedoes. The Y-wing's shields and hull are more sturdy than those of an X-wing,
enabling it to take much more punishment. This is needed, because the Y-wing is slow
and unwieldy in combat. This made it increasingly more dangerous to use as the Empire
fielded faster ships, such as the TIE Interceptor and TIE Advanced, which could
literally fly circles around a Y-wing.
Gold Squadron flew Y-wings in the Battle of Yavin. Y-wings were also present at the
Battle of Endor, but their effectiveness was limited due to the presence of the
Empire's TIE Interceptors and TIE Advanced. Y-wings are commonly used by pirates and
smuggling operations, which utilize the ship's use in capturing vessels to board and
raid cargo liners and transports.
