Description - Space superiority fighter. Excellent multi-role craft. Since introduction it has
become the mainstay fighter of the Rebel Fleet. First choice of fighter for Rogue Squadron,
the elite fighter unit of the Rebels. Carrys a generous payload and good shields.
The X-wing fighter is the ship most commonly associated with the Rebel Alliance.
The Alliance was very fortunate to acquire this incredible starfighter. Shortly
before the Emperor seized total control, the designers at Incom, disgusted with
Incom's growing Imperial loyalty, stole the plans and working prototypes of the
X-wing and defected to the Alliance. The X-wing's actual name is the T-65 Space
Superiority Fighter, but the Rebels, following the tradition begun by the
Y-wing fighter, dubbed it the "X-wing" due to its distinctive S-Foil
positioning. The S-Foils, normally closed during hyperspace or atmospheric
flight, open into an "X" during combat. This positioning increases the target
range of the ship's lasers. The X-wing is also called a "snub fighter".
The X-wing is probably the Alliance's best, most reliable starfighter. Its
shields and hull are sturdy enough to withstand several hits, and its four
laser cannons and two proton torpedo launchers give it ample firepower to deal
with enemy fighters and capital ships alike. The inclusion of an astromech
droid makes onboard repairs possible, even during battle. Several times during
the Battle of Yavin Artoo-Detoo made minor corrections aboard Red 5, Luke
Skywalker's X-wing. The X-wing's one drawback is its lack of ion cannons,
which limits its usefulness in capture operations. Its manueverability and
toughness more than make up for this, however, making this ship a favourite
among Rebel pilots.
In the Battle of Yavin, Red Squadron flew X-wings against the Death Star
to provide cover fire for the Y-wings. It was in an X-wing that Luke Skywalker
fired the proton torpedoes that destroyed the Death Star. Wedge Antilles piloted
an X-wing when he helped to destroy the second Death Star in the Battle of Endor.
All the members of Rogue Squadron, the famed group of elite fighter pilots
serving under the Rebellion (and then the New Republic), chose to fly X-wings
even after the advent of more technologically advanced starfighters, such as the
A-wing, B-wing, and T-wing.
