Description - Interceptor. Excellent speed and maneuverability make this craft a formidable
dogfighter. Good multi-role craft, carrys a good payload, although not always equipped with 12
warheads.
The A-wing Starfighter's creation and deployment was kept a secret by the
Rebellion. Imperial pilots began telling stories of a lightning-quick craft
that jumped into their midst from hyperspace, took sensor readings and/or made
strafing runs, and jumped out again. The mystery surrounding the A-wing fighter
made it a useful reconnaisance and long-range interception ship until its use
became widespread enough to make it recognizable. The A-wing was designed by
Rebel General Jan Dodonna, who created and supervised the Rebel attack against
the first Death Star. Its role was to provide cover for larger ships, whose
turbolasers were effective against capital ships but were often unable to
track quicker-moving starfighters. It quickly became useful in many other
roles. Quick and manueverable, Rebel rookie pilots were often warned to stay
away from the A-wing until they could handle the comparatively slow speeds of
X-wings and Y-wings.
At the time of the Battle of Endor and before, the A-wing
was faster than any other ship in either participant of the Galactic Civil War's
fleet. It could outrun and outmaneuver TIE Fighters and TIE Advanced, and was
quicker than the TIE Interceptor (although their maneuverabilities were evenly
matched, except in atmosphere, where the A-wing outclassed the TIE Interceptor).
These attributes made it perfect for reconnoitering depots and convoys prior to an
attack. It was also an excellent dogfighting ship, as its speed made it nigh
impossible to hit.
The A-wing is armed with two laser cannons mounted on its nose
and two concussion missile launchers. Concussion missiles are not strong enough to
do much damage against capital ships' shields, but are quicker and are better able
to track enemy starfighters, reinforcing the A-wing's dogfighting capabilities.
Pilots who fly A-wings had better be able to use its speed to good effect, however,
because its shields and hull strength are woefully inadequate. It can only sustain
several hits before being destroyed. What is worse, the lack of an astromech unit
precludes the possibility of damage repair. Again, however, correctly utilizing the
A-wing's speed and manueverability greatly reduces the chance of being hit.
Blue Squadron in the Battle of Endor piloted A-wings. It was Arvel Crynyd in an
A-wing who destroyed the Super-Star Destroyer Executor in that battle. After
firing upon the massive ship, Crynyd's A-wing was hit by turbolaser fire and
started to careen out of control. He smashed into the bridge of the Executor(the
Executor's forward shields had been overloaded earlier in the fight), causing it
to lose flight control and fall into the gravity well of the Death Star, destroying
the ship and damaging the Death Star.
